What is a brigadeiro?

Brigadeiros (pronounced "bree-gah-DAY-roh") are Brazil's most beloved chocolate treat - a perfect marriage of fudge, truffle, and caramel all rolled into one irresistible bite.

Made with sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, butter, and chocolate, these little spheres are slowly cooked to create a creamy, slightly chewy texture that melts in your mouth. Each one is hand-rolled and coated in chocolate sprinkles, coconut, or other delicious toppings for a soft "crunch" in the outer layer.

Think of them as Brazil's answer to truffles - delicate, rich, and nostalgic. Every Brazilian grew up eating these at birthday parties, celebrations, and family gatherings.

The origin of the name "brigadeiro" is linked to the 1946 presidential campaign of Brigadier Eduardo Gomes. A supporter of his candidacy created this new confection and named it after the brigadier: "doce do brigadeiro" (lit. brigadeir's sweet). 

Women across Brazil sold the new "brigadeiros" to support his campaign - it was the first national election in which women were able to vote. While he didn't win the presidency, we all won something far sweeter: this delightful treat that has brought joy to generations of Brazilians.

Today, no Brazilian celebration is complete without brigadeiros.
